harris and lewis photography workshop
The Isles of Harris and Lewis, part of Scotland's Outer Hebrides, are a landscape photographer's dream, with their breathtaking vistas that evoke a sense of wonder at every turn. Where the rugged coastline hugs the sea, the water sparkles under the sun, displaying a mesmerizing palette of blues that range from deep navy to radiant turquoise. As you traverse the islands, you encounter an abundance of stunning locations, each offering a unique perspective on the natural beauty that defines this rugged archipelago. From the pristine white sands of Luskentyre Beach, where the dunes contrast sharply against the rich blue of the Atlantic, to the jagged cliffs of the coastline, every corner reveals an untouched paradise. The dramatic cliffs at Harris rise majestically, sculpted by time and the relentless forces of nature, creating compelling compositions that draw the eye and inspire creativity. The evocative landscapes are further enhanced by the ever changing weather patterns, which can shift from serene to tempestuous in an instant, providing dynamic skies that add depth and drama to your photographs. Whether capturing the ethereal light of a misty morning over the Isles’ many and varied Lochs, or the vibrant hues of a sunset casting a golden glow on the moors, the Isles of Harris and Lewis offer an endless canvas for artistic expression. The interplay of land and sea here is truly a feast for the senses, and a pilgrimage for anyone passionate about capturing nature’s artistry at its finest.
In order to keep prices competitive and to be as flexible as we possibly can around the prevailing light and conditions during the week, we’ll be based in self catering accommodation (single occupancy rooms). We’ll be very centrally located to all the areas we are likely to visit, and seven nights accommodation is included. Regarding food, I tend to provide some of the evening meals for us during the week (prepared in advance), and other members of our groups often like to do the same. However, we are based quite close to Stornoway, so there is always the option to eat out on an evening a couple of times if you’d prefer. Also, it’s very easy to reach the local Tescos if we need to stock up on any items.
Transport for the duration of the week is provided, and if you are travelling from West Yorkshire or you are on my route, I can provide a lift to and from Harris.
With a whole six days to explore the islands, we’ll visit a real mix of locations; Pristine, unspoilt, dune fringed beaches, ruined crofts, towering sea stacks, lighthouses, ancient stone circles, salt marsh, antiquated harbours and possibly one or two of the lochs and lochans with spectacular views over to the mountains. As always, we try to react to the prevailing conditions in order to maximise our chances of making good images, rather than setting a defined location itinerary. As mentioned earlier, the weather here can change in an instant, and we may visit some of the larger areas more than once just to make sure that we can fully explore and get the best from them.
Finally, I am on hand to help you get the very best images you can. Whether you need assistance with composition or camera technique, I’ve been running workshops all over the UK now since 2012, so you can be assured that you are in very good hands, whether you’re an experienced photographer or only just starting out.
