Beginner Photography Workshops in Yorkshire

I began running a series of workshops a few years ago, specifically aimed at beginner Photographers or those who maybe had a past interest in Photography and wished to reignite their old passion and take up the hobby again. Although all the Photography workshops on the website are tailored exactly to the individual, so suitable for all levels, it became very clear that many people preferred to learn in a group where everyone was starting out at the same level.

Whenever we try to learn a new skill or technique, it obviously pays to be able to break the subjects down into easily digestible, simple pieces of information that we find easy to understand and implement. Photography is no different. If we start with just two categories, lets say the technical and the artistic, it becomes clear that if we can first learn the technical aspects (camera control etc), so it becomes very natural, this then leaves us free to fully concentrate and therefore do more justice in our artistic approach to the subjects that we Photograph. Gaining a full understanding of how your camera works and precise control over exposure and focusing is only the first step on the ladder to becoming a proficient Photographer, but it is one of the greater and more satisfying leaps which will almost certainly give you a great deal more confidence to begin experimenting with your camera and the subjects that you tend to Photograph.

Everyone is obviously different in the way that they take onboard new information and skills, so the Beginner workshops, all based here in Yorkshire are designed to reflect this. Whether you feel you would learn best as part of a small group of like minded individuals, or at a one to one level, there will be a workshop listed on the website which exactly matches your requirements.

Beginner Photography Workshops (West Yorkshire)

This is an eight hour day which aims to give you the confidence and understanding to take full control of your camera, as well as the Photography process. The day begins with a short theory session and simple explanations regarding exactly how the camera works. We then go through the various stages of setting up your camera for best practice, again with simple explanations describing how and more importantly, why we are using the settings that we are. We will then usually visit at least two to three other locations through the day, all chosen to give you a slightly different challenge to the last and to put everything into practice. I am always on hand to offer advice and guidance or answer any questions you might have and I work with everyone on an individual basis for the majority of the day and wherever possible.

  • Location – Usually Calderdale (Halifax, Hebden Bridge) but locations such as Brighouse, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Leeds are sometimes chosen depending on the time of year.
  • Start times – Start times may vary depending on time of year but usually 07:00 – 07:30 am.
  • Duration – The workshop lasts around eight hours with a short break for lunch.
  • Maximum group size – five people
  • Included – Full days tuition, plus simple P.D.F notes detailing everything we cover on the day and also any follow up support required via email/phone. Loan of any necessary equipment such as tripods/filters etc.
  • Excluded – Transport to the workshop location. Personal/equipment/medical insurance.

Beginner Photography Workshops (Yorkshire Dales)

Recently introduced, the Beginner Photography workshops (Yorkshire Dales) follow a very similar format to the one detailed above. The emphasis of the workshop is still very much on learning the basic technical aspects of Photography and precise camera control, but the day is just slightly longer, meaning we can visit a wider range of locations which offer differing potential challenges and extended time to practice. The Yorkshire Dales scenery is stunning and locations that we will visit are chosen on the day and around the prevailing weather conditions. The hope is that you will go away with some fantastic images to show for your efforts and newly acquired skills.

  • Location – Meeting YDNPA car park, Malham. We will visit a number of locations throughout the day. Possible locations within the Malhamdale, Ribblesdale, Littondale area.
  • Start times – Start times may vary depending on time of year but usually 07:00 – 07:30 am.
  • Duration – The workshop lasts around ten hours with a short break for lunch.

Basics for beginners (One to one workshop)

The Basics for beginners covers all the same material as the workshops detailed above, but was developed to make the learning process as simple and convenient as it could possibly be. This is a one to one workshop and although it is a midweek workshop, you can specify the start/finish time and date to suit yourself. Rather than having set locations, I travel to you (within West Yorkshire). I can travel slightly further but this would incur minimal extra fuel charges. As always we start the day with a short theory session, after which we can either practice around your house/garden, or we can venture out locally (maybe a park or a local church yard etc). The aim being that you will be able to easily replicate everything that we cover on the day when you come to practice after the workshop. Again, follow up support via email/phone is always available.
